A pottery cup made by OLARIA GRANDELA, a workshop that began about 100 years ago in Mafra, a town in the suburbs of Lisbon, Portugal. The slender yet plump form, which conveys the softness of the clay, and the varying shades of color created by the local red clay and two types of glaze are unique to each piece, giving a sense of Portuguese warmth. The small size is perfect for a quick cup of coffee.

In Mafra, a town in the suburbs of Lisbon, pottery using local red clay has been made since the 12th century. Unlike the dark orange pottery with elaborate patterns often seen in Lisbon and Alentejo, these vessels, characterized by their light-colored glazes, are made by OLARIA GRANDELA. The cups and vessels found at vintage markets were discontinued long ago, but have been reproduced using the original molds. The workshop began in Mafra four generations ago and continues to produce items with about 10 artisans after relocating to the Alentejo region in 2013. They continue to use clay from Mafra because its earthy texture complements Portuguese cuisine. The shapes, cultivated through Portuguese food culture, and the tactile feel when holding these cups for wine or coffee, olive dishes, or rice pots, all evoke a sense of warmth.
