【Early Edo Period】Arariguchi Atsumaru Kama (Thick Round Kettle with Hail Pattern Spout) by Jōmi Nagoshi (Old Jōmi)
This is an Arare-gama (kettle) with a refined Kojomi (old taste) finish by Onishi Jo-chu.
It features a unique mouth design with a thicker rim than usual.
Similar examples can be found from the Tenmei period, adding to its rustic charm.
The Arare (hailstone pattern) is pressed in an old-fashioned style, with each grain clearly defined.
There is no artificial texture, giving it a Wabi (rustic simplicity) atmosphere reminiscent of the Tenmei period.
The kettle was filled with water for a while and no leaks were detected.
The lid has a rare chrysanthemum finial.
There is a crack on the front of the box.
The inscription reads as follows:
Arare Maru Gama
1. Body diameter: 7 sun 5 bu
2. Mouth width: 3 sun 6 bu
3. Handle attachment: Oni-men (demon face)
The above is a genuine work by Kojomi from the Genroku era.
Kettle craftsman: Onishi Seiemon
Dimensions (approximate, with slight errors):
Body diameter: Approx. 23 cm (excluding handle attachments)
[NAGOSHI JO-MI]
The Nagoshi family has been renowned for casting since ancient times, with their name appearing from the early days of Wabi-cha.
During the Momoyama period, Nagoshi Jōyū and Zenshō gained fame as master craftsmen, and their children continued production, splitting into Kyoto (Jōmi) and Edo (Yagoro).
The third generation, Sanshō of the first Jōmi, is also known for crafting the famous Hōkō-ji temple bell during the Siege of Osaka.
Kettle making continued until the fourth generation, Sanden, after which works are said to be made by others.
