Kaga Hachiman Okidashi Doll by Senkei

This is a Kaga Hachiman Okiagari doll, a traditional craft and folk toy from Kaga Hyakuman-goku.

This doll is based on the legend that when Emperor Ojin (Hachiman-sama) was born, he was wrapped in crimson silk floss with only his face showing.

This doll is imbued with prayers for warding off evil, protection from misfortune, good health, and physical well-being.

Purchased in Kanazawa in 2010, this is an unused, beautiful item that has been stored in its box at home for a long time.

The manufacturer is Nakajima Menya, founded in 1862 (Bunkyu 2). The company name Menya (meaning noodle shop) originated from their early business of making masks for village plays.

This handmade doll is made by Senkei, the seventh-generation craftsman of Nakajima Menya, Mr. Yoshihiro Nakajima. Dolls made by Senkei feature a glossy face and a matte body. The body is decorated with auspicious pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms, and a bell inside makes a cute rattling sound every time it rights itself.

It is perfect as a New Year's decoration, a complementary decoration for Children's Day or the Doll Festival, or for everyday display.
